Leading Armies, Getting Tuff and Going Up A Tower: QuickReview!September 16, 2009
QuickReview (noun): A sudden, and efficient way of reviewing more than one game in a short, concise post. See Multitasking.
Today we review three, plot-light games that you may or may not have heard of: Magic Sword, Mr. Tuff, and Ogre Battle: March of The Black Queen.
Mr. Tuff for the SNES is a platformer game which involves, literally, beating the shit out of everything. I’m not kidding, you’re basically a robot bent on destroying everything he comes along with his giant wrecking ball fists. It’s neat how some of the power-ups ranges from a flaming fist to a chainsaw capable of cutting through almost anything. Fortunately the gameplay makes up for the almost lack of plot that there is. Then again, some platformers are a little plot light.
Magic Sword for the SNES is a tale of a young adventure who must venture into a 33-story tower (Really, I’m not kidding) fighting hordes of evil monsters while being aided by a strange and colorful cast ranging from a giant who throws axes like boomerangs, to the simple White Wizard. This is another of those games which are heavy on gameplay, and almost nonexistent on the plot. It kind of reminds me of Persona 3, but only without the plugging yourself in the head and the fact that you go to a high school. This is also a hard game, because this game will throw almost ANYTHING at you. It’s one of those games which will make you curse because a skeleton pops out of nowhere and hits you, therefore making you lose again. It’s a fun game if you want to kill some time(I don’t know how, but I lost an hour and a half playing this game), but not really enough to get you hooked into it.
Ogre Battle: March of The Black Queen is a strategy-heavy games for the SNES which pits you against an entire evil empire. Well, not by yourself, but you are in control up to 9 Units of different classes. The battles are all in Real Time, so there is a sense of urgency within the game that you have to act fast. I’m not really much of a strategy fan(I suck at them, mainly because my tactic is “TO DEATH!”) but those who are looking at a fun time waster, this is the game for you.
And that is it for this first Quick Review, you can find these ROMs and more at your local, neighborhood ROM site, because I sure as hell won’t tell you where!
